"The Christmas Song"

Grampy's idea of a great Christmas song!
"Home
for Christmas" Eve with our Family

|
|
There
are three children, Ron, Carol and Laura (the
writer). As we all grew up and got married, the
tradition of "Home for Christmas"
began. We all went home on Christmas Eve, no
matter where we were, no matter what other
invitations we received, no matter what. As we
all got married (the Christmas Eve tradition
agreement was entered into BEFORE marriage) and
had children of our own, we grew to be quite a
crowd for Christmas Eve. Now, there are seven
grandchildren, some of whom have children of
their own, totalling six greatgrandchildren. We
are spread across the eastern United States, but
we all come "Home for Christmas". It is
the one day of the year, that we are all
together.
|
We put
out a buffet feast every year for Christmas Eve.
Of course, this was Dad's favorite part of the
evening. He would start talking about "when
we gonna eat?" before he would let us get
through the door!

Once we finish the
first trip to the buffet (one for us, three for
Dad!) it was time to open gifts. The littlest one
gets to go first, then the next, etc. The look of
anticipation on the faces of the babes is
priceless, as you can see from the photo on the left. You know they are all thinking "I
hope its my turn next!" Grampy still passes
out the presents one at a time, so he can see
what Santa brought to everyone! |
After
the hustle and bustle of the evening, when
everyone would settle down. The kids are off
playing with their new toys, and the grown-ups
are enjoying each other's company, it would
become apparent that Dad was awfully quiet. After
the first couple of years, we stopped going
looking for him, we knew exactly where he was, he
had fallen asleep wherever he was sitting, taking
his "Christmas Eve Nap"!

We
didn't say much about his nap.
We knew it was going to happen and, after all,
"GrampySanta" had been so busy in his workshop
making
all those wonderful things for the grandchildren!
